All my career has been focused on beautifying buildings and spreading messages using blank surfaces, most of them in the peripheries and remote areas of cities, where art is rarely found. Through my art I have had the chance to work worldwide, but this commission in Cyprus is unique. I was invited to collaborate on the Art Square project from the outset, and I’ve been involved in the decisional sphere of its construction in order to help create something organic and artistic that could inhabit this new residential development.
This process has been completely new for me, very challenging, but so rewarding. It will be my first time working on something created as a platform for my art, and I took my inspiration from the nature of Cyprus; from its variety and also its symbolism.
As a community is made up of different elements – such as people of different ages – sharing and taking care of the same space, so my compositions deal with the hidden and varied meanings of each natural species. For example, by representing an oak I’m referencing our dearest old ones and their wisdom. That’s why, in my own way, I’ve chosen to portray the differences, in order to create a space that is inclusive as a community.
